A conversation with Mathias Énard, winner of the 2015 Goncourt Prize, on the topic of an “other” Orient: romantic, magical, and radiant.

Born in Niort in 1972, Mathias Énard has lived for extended periods and travelled throughout the Middle East. He studied Persian and Arabic, and currently lives in Barcelona.

He is the author of six novels published by Actes Sud: The Perfection of the Shot (2003, prix des Cinq Continents de la francophonie), Remonter l’Orénoque (2005), Zone (2008, prix Décembre, prix du Livre Inter), Parle-leur de batailles, de rois et d’éléphants (2010, prix Goncourt des lycéens, prix du Livre in Poitou-Charentes 2011), Street of Thieves (2014, Open Letter), and Boussole (2015, prix Goncourt 2015).

Other works include Bréviaire des artificiers (Verticales, 2007) and L’Alcool et la Nostalgie (Inculte, 2011, Babel).
