Un Français nommé Gabin

Return
Jean Alexis Gabin Moncorgé had two childhood dreams: to be a farmer and a train driver. But Gabin became an actor and thus—through film—a labourer, trucker, boss, cop and crook, president and deserter, and a train driver. And a farmer. From the Popular Front to the Trente Glorieuses, he embodied the France of town and battlefield, of farm and factory, of café and grocer’s, of harbour and suburb. The French recognised themselves in Gabin. He was the most emblematic actor of his century.
